When a guest initiates an order with a credit card, GoTab performs an automatic authorization, locking the funds equivalent to the outstanding balance.

Each time the guest places a new order, GoTab repeats the authorization process, ensuring that the funds for that specific order are securely reserved.

Our step-by-step authorization approach guarantees that you collect the necessary funds before proceeding with order fulfillment.

Operators have the flexibility to add or remove this feature for customer-initiated orders, server-initiated orders, or all orders through a simple update in GoTab Manager Dashboard.

FAQ
Common questions about this feature.
It is the check a point-of-sale runs before a guest orders again, confirming the card on the tab still covers what they owe. If it will not, the tab is stopped at that order rather than at closing time — when the guest has already had the drinks and may already be gone.
It depends on how your venue is configured. With progressive authorization on, each new order re-checks the card for the running balance, so you learn early if it will not cover the tab. That leaves a pending line per order. With it off, one authorization opens the tab and one charge closes it.
Because a hold is not a charge. Each authorization leaves its own pending line, and the final settlement is a separate line again. On a fifty-dollar tab a guest can see three entries and conclude they were billed twice. Nothing is taken more than once, but the lines are real.
Two to five business days, and it is the guest's bank that decides, not the venue. Local banks and credit unions on older systems sit at the slow end. On a credit card the hold only shows as pending; on a debit card the money is genuinely out of reach until it clears.
The tab stays open with a balance due and is flagged across every GoTab location, so the same card cannot open another failed tab anywhere. Progressive authorization is what keeps this rare: the decline surfaces at the next order, while the guest is still at the bar, instead of at closing.
