What to Look for in a Coffee Shop POS

What to Look for in a Coffee Shop POS

Running a coffee shop isn’t just about crafting the perfect espresso—it’s about keeping operations smooth, customers happy, and sales flowing. A great Coffee Shop Point of Sale (POS) system is the backbone of a successful café, helping you manage everything from order speed to customer loyalty. If your POS isn’t making life easier, it’s time for an upgrade.

Here’s what to look for in a coffee shop POS that keeps your business running efficiently while delivering the best customer experience.

Faster Transactions, Shorter Lines

Speed is everything in a coffee shop. Whether it’s the morning rush or an afternoon caffeine fix, customers don’t want to wait. A slow, clunky POS system leads to long lines, frustrated patrons, and missed revenue opportunities.

A coffee shop POS should enable quick order-taking and seamless transactions. GoTab’s Self-Ordering Kiosk, for example, allows customers to place their own orders, eliminating bottlenecks and keeping baristas focused on making drinks rather than punching in orders. The result? Faster service, fewer mistakes, and a more efficient workflow.

Seamless Upselling to Increase Sales

Your POS shouldn’t just process transactions—it should help you grow your average order size. An intuitive POS system suggests add-ons and upgrades in a way that feels natural to customers.

With a self-ordering kiosk, customers can see high-quality images of specialty drinks, pastries, or upgrades like oat milk or extra espresso shots. This visual appeal encourages customers to explore options they might not have considered, increasing ticket sizes without baristas having to push upsells manually.

Integrated Loyalty Programs That Drive Repeat Business

Loyal customers are the key to long-term success, and a great POS makes it easy to reward them. Built-in loyalty programs encourage repeat visits by offering incentives like:

  • A free coffee after a certain number of purchases
  • Discounts for frequent buyers
  • Exclusive promotions for birthdays or special occasions

With GoTab’s automated loyalty features, customers are reminded when they’re close to earning a reward, keeping them engaged and more likely to return. A smart POS turns occasional visitors into lifelong regulars.

Customization to Match Your Coffee Shop’s Brand

Your coffee shop has a unique personality, and your POS system should reflect that. A customizable interface allows you to showcase your branding, menu specials, and seasonal offerings in a way that aligns with your business’s aesthetic.

GoTab’s kiosk and POS system allow you to:

  • Feature limited-time drinks or seasonal menu items
  • Highlight special promotions
  • Customize the interface with your logo and brand colors

This level of personalization helps create a cohesive customer experience that reinforces your brand identity.

Contactless and Flexible Payment Options

Today’s customers expect multiple payment options. A modern POS should support credit cards, mobile wallets, and contactless payments for a frictionless checkout experience.

GoTab’s Coffee Shop POS system ensures customers can pay the way they prefer, reducing wait times and making transactions smoother. This is especially important during busy periods when quick, hassle-free payments keep the line moving.

Smart Backend Management for Better Operations

A coffee shop is more than just coffee—it’s a business that requires tight operational control. Your POS should go beyond processing payments by providing tools to manage:

  • Inventory tracking to ensure you never run out of key ingredients
  • Sales data to identify peak hours and best-selling items
  • Staff scheduling to optimize labor costs and efficiency

GoTab’s real-time reporting and analytics give you the insights needed to make smarter decisions, so you can streamline operations and maximize profitability.

Mobile & Online Ordering for Added Convenience

Many customers prefer to order ahead and skip the line. A POS system that integrates mobile and online ordering capabilities makes this easy. With GoTab, customers can place their coffee orders from their phones, pay in advance, and pick up their drinks without waiting.

Additionally, if you offer delivery, your POS should integrate with third-party platforms like UberEats or DoorDash, ensuring that you capture every possible sale.

A POS That Scales with Your Business

Your coffee shop might start as a single location, but what happens when you expand? A great POS should be able to grow with you—whether you’re adding new locations, launching a pop-up shop, or offering a subscription coffee service.

GoTab’s cloud-based system ensures that all locations are synced, providing seamless management across multiple storefronts. Instead of dealing with disconnected systems, you get a unified platform that scales as your business grows.

Advanced Order and Tab Functionality

Whether a customer wants to split the bill, keep a tab open, or modify their order, your POS should handle it effortlessly. A flexible system ensures that:

  • Customers can start a tab and add to their order without paying upfront
  • Groups can split checks easily
  • Orders can be modified on the fly without causing confusion

GoTab’s Handheld POS allows staff to manage orders on the move, reducing trips back and forth to a stationary terminal and speeding up service.

The Right POS Powers Your Coffee Shop’s Success

A well-designed POS system is more than a tool—it’s the engine that drives your coffee shop’s success. From improving service speed and boosting sales to streamlining operations and fostering customer loyalty, the right POS makes a significant difference.

GoTab’s  Coffee Shop POS and Self-Ordering Kiosk provide everything a coffee shop needs to thrive, with features designed to enhance efficiency, increase revenue, and create a better experience.

Situated “in the heart of it all, yet tranquil enough to make you feel away from it all too,” The Limelight Hotel Snowmass offers 99 hotel rooms and 11 residences, as well as footsteps-to-gondola access in winter and summer — right in the middle of Snowmass Base Village.

The Situation

Especially over the last few years, the Limelight Hotels IT team had witnessed a significant shift to contactless technology in the hospitality industry. After evaluating friction points in the guest journey, aligning with modern technology platforms in their restaurant was determined to be an effective way to offer elevated contactless dining experiences to their guests while also evolving their technology platforms to continue to support long-term company goals. Limelight Hotel partnered with GoTab to provide an enhanced on-demand dining experience on par with the brand’s reputation for exceptional guest service.

The Solution

Reducing Staff Touch Points Without Sacrificing Guest Experience

Guests are now able to begin a tab from their room or the property’s restaurant by scanning a QR code, texting a link to friends or family members on the ski slope to add in their orders, then meeting up together at the patio or lodge to enjoy their meal and après ski festivities without interruption. By streamlining tasks like inputting orders and processing payments, this eliminates friction for hotel staff and allows them to focus on delivering renowned guest service for a memorable experience. Since partnering with GoTab, Limelight Snowmass has consistently seen higher check averages and sales.

“We found the Point of Sale platforms we were looking at offered the guest and staff limited opportunities to further reduce touch points or improve the traditional restaurant experience. The GoTab platform enabled the guest to take an active role over the flow of their experience while simultaneously reducing touch points and further streamlining restaurant operations.”Nick Giglio, Manager of Hotel IT Operations, The Little Nell Hotel Group

According to the Limelight Hotels team, some of the other platforms that were evaluated were either missing some of the pieces they were looking for, had weak customer support models, or had little willingness to develop integrations to existing hotel platforms already in place. To that end, GoTab integrated with cloud-based platform, Infor. Together, GoTab and Infor are providing dynamic solutions to support central, efficient service across hotel amenities and deliver exceptional guest experiences.

“Previously, guests would call down to the restaurant to begin an order from their room or while they were out enjoying the ski slopes. Using GoTab, guests can now place orders from anywhere on the resort, giving them the on-demand service they want without interrupting their day. GoTab empowers us to give control to the guest, reducing touch points and streamlining overall restaurant operations, making Limelight Hotel the resort of choice for Snowmass.”Nick Giglio, Manager of Hotel IT Operations, The Little Nell Hotel Group

Since introducing GoTab, The Limelight Hotel has seen a consistent level of upsells and items sold per check resulting in additional revenue capture. They have been able to maintain service levels in their restaurants during periods when there was reduced staffing available without significantly diminishing the guest experience.

The Benefits

Eliminate Phone Orders – Take Orders from the Slopes. Guests can start a tab from their room or on the mountain without interrupting the flow of their day.
